Hi Stinger,
I've fitter a digital bicycle speedometer on the handlebars of my Savage. This digital speedo has a trip meter which I set to zero when I fill up. The trip milage is always visible when riding. The bike runs onto reserve at about 110 miles.
This speedo is also easier to see than the tank top item. I can also see the digital speedo when the tank is covered by a bag when camping. It cost £9.50, which is about US$14. Whoever thought the top of the tank was a good place to put a speedo?
I've stopped my Savage leeking oil. See my posting dated 10-18-2002.
I've not done anything about the backfiring as my bike does it only very occaisionally. I also have no problems stopping the engine and dieseling as described by others on here. I stop my engine with the key switch. The occaisional pops and bangs let me know the bike has character and is alive! Try using the throttle progresivly and not like a switch that's either on of off.
I have tried Jon D's seat modification and it feels just fine to me.

I agree with you that the Savage should be sorted when it leaves the factory.

Happy Savage riding.
